Common Types of Microbiology Media
LMDA
(LEE’S MULTIDIFFERENTIAL AGAR)
Detects acid-tolerant bacteria due to the low pH of LMDA media. Acid-producing colonies produce a clear yellow halo around the colonies.
Other bacteria produce colonies in colors from white to yellow-green depending on the species and strain.
WLN
(WALLERSTEIN’S NUTRIENT AGAR)
Non selective media; detects all brewer’s yeast, wild yeast and some kinds of bacteria common in brewing
WLD
(WALLERSTEIN’S DIFFERENTIAL AGAR)
WLN with the addition of cyclohexamide, an antifungal that will screen out brewer’s and wild yeast and allowing the growth of common bacterial contamination in brewing.
LCSM
(LEE’S CUPRIC SULFATE MEDIA AGAR)
Used for the detection of wild yeast strains, while inhibiting the growth of brewer’s yeast
